This beautiful American town has a storied history of wild west folk lore, and adventurous cowboy mischief. Hays was incorporated in 1867, close to the site of Fort Hays, a government post established by the U. S government. As was the case with many towns on the frontier, Hays was a lawless town full of Salons and Dance Halls.
The legendary Wild Bill Hickok served as sheriff for a few months in 1869, but left town the next year after a brawl with some troopers from Fort Hays. George Custer also stayed for a short time, as he encamped close to Fort Hays before moving on to South Dakota, and Montana.
